Prince Gnarls (Stephen Hinton) (American, b. 1984)

“Killer”

12″ h x 18″ w, archival print (signed, numbered 1/6) (2025)

I first met Prince Gnarls at a Portland art fair. Being a fan of prints, I asked if his were limited or open editions. He said no, they were all limited runs. So I asked “why aren’t they numbered?” He gave me a look and said “you know, I’m not sure!” Next time I saw him — all of his new prints were numbered. Consider this my tiny contribution to the art world.

Prince Gnarls’ work takes demonic characters and erotic themes, and translates them into a contemporary pop art context. Many of his pieces reference iconic millennial cultural moments (consider this riff on Demi Moore’s famous Vanity Fair cover). Given the increasing prevalence of anime themes in popular culture, I’m honestly surprised we haven’t seen more pop art run in this direction (especially given the megastar status of Takashi Murakami). But I’m actually very confident that sooner or later, this will be the future of pop.
